Independent Investigative Mechanism of Myanmar (IIMM) warned on Tuesday what had happened increase in “war crimes” and “brutal atrocities” perfect the military junta that runs the country after the coup d’etat that took place in February 2021.

In its annual report, the mechanism stated that “there is substantial evidence that brutal crimes committed by the army have increased at an alarming rate across the country,” as reflected in information collected and analyzed between July 2023 and June 2024.

Thus, “significant evidence of these increasingly brutal and violent crimes, including airstrikes on schools, religious buildings and hospitals in which there was no obvious military purpose.” To this were added “infliction of injuries on detainees during armed conflicts, including beheadings and public display of sexually mutilated and deformed bodies.”

Nikolay Kumdzhyan, The director of the mechanism stated:

We have collected substantial evidence showing horrific levels of brutality and inhumanity throughout Burma. Many crimes were committed for the purpose of punishment and to incite terror among the civilian population.

In this sense, he regretted that Thousands of people were arrested, many of them tortured or killed. during his time behind bars. According to the report, there is ample evidence systematic tortureincluding serious physical and mental abuse such as beatings, electric shocks, strangulation and sleep deprivation.

There is also evidence gang rapes, burning of body parts and other violent crimes of a sexual nature and sex, committed during detention. Among the victims are people of all genders and ages, including children.

No one has been held accountable for any of the crimes, which has emboldened the perpetrators and reinforced the culture of impunity in the country. We are trying to break this vicious circle. I believe that the mechanism has made significant progress in bringing criminal cases against those who bear the greatest responsibility for these crimes.

Myanmar or Burma The country was plunged into violent chaos after the military overthrew the country’s former de facto leader. Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party won the November 2020 elections. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is currently serving a long prison sentence.

However, and although the vast majority information collected by this UN mechanism refers to crimes committed by Burmese security forcesthere is also “credible evidence” crimes committed by armed groups fighting against the army. This includes summary executions of civilians suspected of being informants or military collaborators.
