Google launches three new Pixel 9 smartphones: from M to XL

Pixels 9

The new Pixel devices were officially introduced by Google today. The series includes three models: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL.

The Google Pixel smartphones have been officially available in Belgium since last year. Google has today announced the latest models in the series. Unlike usual, the Pixel 9 series includes three models. In addition to the usual entry-level model and a Pro variant; Google is adding an additional flavor this year with the Pixel 9 Pro XL.

Pixels 9

The Pixel 9 is a compact device with a screen diagonal of 6.3 inches: slightly larger than the Pixel 8. The screen has 1080 x 2424 pixels and, according to Google, has a peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits.

The 4,700 mAh battery can be extended to up to 100 hours on a single charge in Extreme Battery Saver mode. Charging power jumps to 45 W. That’s still not lightning fast, but still significantly faster than the Pixel 8. Wireless charging is supported.

Photography has been a staple of Pixel phones since the first generations. The Pixel 9 has two cameras: a 50MP main camera and a 48MP wide-angle lens. The main camera’s optical zoom range goes up to 2x, which can be digitally extended to 8x. On the front, there’s a 10.5MP lens.

All three Pixel 9 phones are powered by a home-grown Tensor G4 processor. Google’s chips are generally not speed demons in the flagship segment, but they are powerful and reliable. An integrated Titan M2 security chip ensures security on the device.

Extra large

The entry-level model and the Pro version are close to each other this year. The screen size is almost identical, but the Pixel 9 Pro has significantly more pixels (1,280 x 2,856). The Pro version also gets an additional camera: a 48 MP telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom range and up to 30x digital zoom at high resolution. The front camera is increased to 42 MP. In addition, we see the same battery and charging capacity and the same processor.

The new addition to the Pixel range is the Pixel Pro XL. With a screen diagonal of 6.7 inches, this device seems to be the successor to the Pixel 8 Pro. A larger screen means space for more pixels (1,344 x 2,992) and the maximum brightness is 3,000 nits. What’s even more XL about this device is the 5,060 mAh battery, which charges with the same capacity.

The cameras and processor of the Pixel 9 Pro XL are identical to those of the Pixel 9 Pro. The Pro versions come with 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage, while the entry-level model is limited to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

Not Android 15 yet, but Gemini

We haven’t yet discussed the most important aspect for Google: the presence of Gemini. The AI assistant will be omnipresent on your device to edit images, translate texts or write messages. Before the launch of the new Pixel devices, Google is announcing new Gemini features.

Gemini Live enables voice conversations with the AI assistant on your phone. You can think of this as the reincarnation of the Google Assistant, which was completely sidelined by Google. In Pixel Studio, you get access to the Image 3 image generator and Pixel Screenshots helps you find screenshots of important information on your phone.

The Pixel 9 devices will soon be the first smartphones with Android 15. They will also come with Android 14 at launch. Google is putting the finishing touches on the new version and the upgrade should not be long in coming. The Pixel 9 devices will receive seven software upgrades and seven years of security updates, one of which will already be used up by Android 15.

Prices and availability

The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL will be the first to hit the shelves on August 2nd. The Pixel 9 Pro will follow a few weeks later, on September 9th. Prices for the Pixel 9 start at 899 euros for 128 GB of storage and 999 euros for 256 GB.

The Pixel 9 Pro costs 1099 euros for 128 GB, 1199 euros for 256 GB and 1329 euros for 512 GB. The most expensive model starts at 1199 euros and costs 1689 euros if you want the maximum storage of 1 TB. All prices include VAT.
