Monkeypox can be spread through close contact. It is usually mild but rarely fatal. Causes flu-like symptoms and rashes on the body filled with pus.

Designating the outbreak as a “public health emergency of international concern,” or PHEIC – WHO’s highest alert level – could accelerate research, funding, international public health action and collaboration to contain disease.

Outbreak in Congo began with the spread of an endemic strainknown as clade I. But the new variant, clade Ib, appears to spread more easily through normal close contact, including sexual contact. It has spread from Congo to neighboring countries including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, prompting action by the WHO.

“It is clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

Another form of monkeypox virus, clade IIb, spread worldwide in 2022, mainly through sexual contact between men who have sex with men. This prompted the WHO to declare a public health emergency, which ended 10 months later.
