Tropical Storm Ernesto grew stronger until it became Category 1 hurricane On Wednesday, as it moved away from the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, leaving more torrential rains and power outages to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses.

Ernesto was located about 280 kilometers (175 miles) northwest of Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, as it moved northwest with winds of about 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour). National Hurricane Center (CNH) in a statement on Wednesday.

“The official forecast still reflects the possibility of Ernesto becoming a high-intensity hurricane in about 48 hours,” the center said.

A storm is considered a hurricane when its sustained winds reach 119 kilometers per hour (km/h). A hurricane of Category 3 or higher has winds of at least 179 km/h (115 mph).

Storm Ernesto is already a hurricane and is moving towards the Gulf of Mexico.

Ernesto, fifth named storm The Atlantic cyclone is expected to approach the British island of Bermuda on Saturday, about 1,093 km east of North Carolina, with precipitation starting on Thursday, CNH said.

More than 500,000 homes and businesses were without power on Wednesday morning. Puerto RicoThis was reported by LUMA Energy, a company that supplies electricity to the US island territory.

“I ask you to stay safe in your homes, have emergency numbers handy, and follow the recommendations of official authorities. “Everyone’s safety is a priority,” Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi said in X.

Schools in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands remained closed Wednesday, as did many government offices. Airports in the Virgin Islands, east and southeast of Puerto Rico, are expected to reopen Wednesday at 10 a.m. local time.

Up to 6 inches (15.2 cm) of rain is expected in the Virgin Islands, and up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) in southeastern Puerto Rico. The Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra are under tropical storm warnings, the hurricane center said.

Ernesto is the second Atlantic storm in a week during this year’s intense hurricane season. Slow-moving Debbie slammed into the Florida coast. Gulf of Mexico as a Category 1 hurricane last week before bringing 2 feet of rain to parts of North and South Carolina.

Hurricane Beryl, the first of the season, became the earliest Category 5 hurricane recorded in the Atlantic when it devastated the Caribbean and U.S. Gulf Coast last month, killing dozens and causing an estimated $6 billion in damage.
