The target was email accounts of US officials and people associated with the vice president. Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
Between May and June, a group of hackers linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard attacked the personal email accounts of about a dozen people close to Biden and Trump, according to Google researchers.
The company is currently seeing failed attempts to log into accounts of people associated with Harris, Biden and Trump.
The Trump campaign has blamed Iran for the leak, but the U.S. government has yet to formally determine who was responsible for the hack or whether the two incidents are related.
For their part, Iranian authorities have denied the accusations, saying they have “no intention or reason to interfere in the US presidential election,” CNN reports.
In the same report, Google said the hacker group, which also targets Israel, increased its attacks in April on users associated with the Israeli military and defense sector, as well as diplomats and non-governmental organizations. In this case, they sent fraudulent emails with malicious links to compromise their victims’ accounts. (Europe Press)
