Thousands of women took to the streets of Kolkata in West Bengal state last night to protest against murder and rape of a 31-year-old resident physicianwhose body was found last Friday in R.G. Car University Hospital in which he worked.

Protesters holding placards demanding “no more rape” or “we want more justice” gathered in various parts of the city, including outside Javadpur University.

It was Aparajita Deb, one of the protesters, who explained this Thursday EFE “that there are too many unclear points around rape.”

“It is quite clear that the government is doing everything possible to hide the evidence,” said the young woman, who accused the regional Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of not supporting the investigation.

The party is an opponent of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has unleashed a political storm over the case.

Thus, Modi mentioned women’s safety this Thursday during his speech on the occasion of India’s Independence Day.

“There is public outrage at the atrocities committed against our mothers and sisters. I feel that outrage. The country, the community, our state governments need to take this seriously.”

The mass demonstrations in Kolkata represent an escalation of protests that have so far been largely medical associationswho questioned the lack of safety in their workplaces.

These protests are expected to continue in the coming days, even though the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Associations of India (FORDA) called off the strike that had hit health services across the country last Tuesday after a meeting with the Indian government’s Health Minister J.P. Nadda.
