Colombian President Gustavo Petro has proposed that Venezuela create a “national front” similar to the one that existed in Colombia in the 20th century when liberals and conservatives alternated in power, as a “transitional” step toward a “final solution” to the crisis the neighboring country is experiencing following the elections.

“Venezuela’s political solution that will bring peace and prosperity to its people depends on Nicolás Maduro. The experience of the Colombian National Front is an experience that, if used temporarily, can help find a final solution,” Petro said in a post on his X account.

The National Front was a political pact between the Liberal and Conservative parties that operated from 1958 to 1974 and succeeded in removing General Gustavo Rojas, who wanted to remain the permanent head of state, from power.

It is an idea similar to that put forward by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who in an interview mentioned the elections in Venezuela and proposed two solutions: the formation of a coalition government uniting members of Chavismo and the opposition, or holding new elections.

The Brazilian reiterated the need for Venezuelan authorities to publish the protocols of the July 28 elections, insisting that it is “still” unknown who won the elections, since the protocols have not been published and the result cannot be independently verified.

Petro and Lula spoke by phone yesterday to try to mediate in the Caribbean country’s open crisis following the July 28 elections.

What was discussed during the conversation remained confidential, according to a source close to the Colombian government, but they could talk about the proposal, which both have now offered individually.

Also today, the foreign ministers of Colombia, Luis Gilberto Murillo, and Brazil, Mauro Vieira, will meet in Bogota, where Venezuela will be a central topic.

Mediation of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil

Last week, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro assured that he still had to talk with Petro, Lula and Mexico’s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who maintained an equal position, not recognizing any winner and asking for the publication of the minutes of the elections.

According to these three countries, the National Electoral Council (CNE) “is responsible, in accordance with its legal mandate, for the transparent disclosure of election results.”

In a joint note issued last week, the foreign ministers of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico said they would continue consultations “at a high level” but with full respect for “the sovereignty and will of the Venezuelan people.”

The CNE’s proclaimed triumph of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro for a third consecutive term has been rejected as a “fraud” by the opposition majority and questioned by several foreign governments and international watchdog groups.

The Venezuelan opposition has called for protests against the official results next Saturday, with Colombia expecting them in the country’s main cities.
