European health authorities on Friday called for stronger control measures after the first case of mpox was detected in Sweden yesterday. (formerly known as monkeypox) from Africa and thereby reduce the risk of large-scale transmission of infection.

ECDC called for effective surveillance, laboratory testing, epidemiological investigation and contact tracing – initiatives similar to those called for by the World Health Organization (WHO).

“The detection of the first mpox clade 1b infection in Sweden highlights the need for affected countries to work together to combat the virus”– warned WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on his account on the social network X.

Tedros called apply “lessons learned” from previous international public health emergencies and called for increased surveillance and “working together to understand transmission” by sharing information and tools such as vaccines.

Hans Kluge, Director of WHO/Europe, commented on the same social network:

I also call on governments, health authorities and the general public not to stigmatize or discriminate against individuals or communities affected by AIDS.

Kluge recalled that 2022 mpox outbreak ‘swiftly stopped’ through collaboration with affected communities, taking appropriate protective measures and creating a ‘caring’ environment.

Vaccines for adolescents and children

Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic announced today that asked the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to extend the authorisation for the use of the smallpox vaccine in adolescents.the only one approved by the competent authorities of Europe and the USA.

“Interim results from clinical trials do not show a lower immune response to vaccines in adolescents and have similar safety profiles compared to adults.”which supports the extension of the current authorisation in Europe beyond 2024,” the company said in a statement.

The Danish firm said it was also preparing another study to evaluate the use of the vaccine in children aged 2 to 12 years, partly funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and set to begin this year in the Republic of Congo and Uganda.
