Google Maps has been around for years one of the most recognized Google services and also one of the most used regular users. Since its launch in early 2005 (actually it will be 20 years in a few months), when it was accessible only from a web browser, it has started adding users and has quickly become the main reference for map services for ordinary mortals.

With the advent of smartphones, Google was quick to respond, bringing Google Maps to Android and also agreeing with Apple to be the default map service for iOS, which remained until the arrival of Apple Maps. And from the first moment it was very clear to Google that they had to work on providing this service (among other things, of course, it’s not something exclusive to maps) on as many operating systems and device types as possible.

Google’s position in the smartwatch market has two main pillars: Wear OS 5 and Pixel Watch deviceswhose third generation was introduced last Tuesday. And of course, this is very directly related to what I mentioned earlier, which is maximizing the reach of Google Maps. And of course, we’ve already seen several moves in this sense in the past, to the extent that nowadays the OS and the device combined with the application and the service already provide a very optimal experience.

But the search engine operating system for smartwatches has had a long-standing debt to pay, and the good news is that it’s finally addressing it. So as we read in GSMArena, Google has already started deploying the ability to download maps locally for using Google Maps offline in Wear OS 5. With it, the maps that we already have synchronized on the smartphone to which we have connected the smartwatch are automatically transferred to it, and they are also updated when there are changes to them.

As we read in this publication, the rollout has begun among users of the second-generation Pixel Watch devices, and we understand that it will be completed when the third-generation devices begin to reach the first users. However, We’re talking about a feature specific to Wear OS 5, not exclusive to Pixel watchesso its arrival on models from other manufacturers is something that, while we don’t know when, we can be pretty sure that it will happen.
