President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said Senegal’s first satellite had been successfully launched into orbit, adding that the move was a major step towards “technological sovereignty” for the West African country. GAINDESAT-1A Fay wrote in a Friday evening X post that he launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 18:56 GMT on Friday.
“This advancement, the result of five years of hard work by our engineers and technicians, is a major step towards our technological sovereignty,” Fay said. “I would like to express my pride and gratitude to everyone who made this project possible,” he added.
Senegal’s public broadcaster RTS reported that the satellite was designed and built by Senegalese engineers in partnership with France’s University of Montpellier Space Center (CSUM).
The broadcaster reported that the Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base and launched a number of satellites, including GAINDESAT-1A, into orbit.
RTS said the satellite will collect data for various government agencies, including the Directorate of Water Resources Management and Planning (DGPRE) and the National Civil Aviation and Meteorological Agency.
