Soon, WhatsApp will let you block messages from unknown phone numbers. This will reduce the risk of spam or fraud via the messaging app.

WABetaInfo noticed the feature in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android. Soon it will be possible to partially or completely block messages from numbers that are not in your contact list. WhatsApp wants to offer better protection against spam and fraud.

The ability to send messages to a number not in your contact list was only added last summer. This meant that you didn’t have to save a phone number before you could chat with it. On the other hand, anyone who knows your phone number can send you a message, even if that person is someone with less than good intentions.

Block unknown numbers

You will soon be able to block messages from unknown numbers again. You can find the function under the privacy settings. You can completely block messages from unknown senders, but it doesn’t have to be that drastic. For example, it is also possible to block a number after a certain number of messages within a short period of time.

For example, a business contact who may not necessarily be in your contact list may send you an occasional message, but a stranger who constantly harasses you may no longer be able to send you messages.

WhatsApp is fully testing the feature and will roll it out soon. There are other ways to block unwanted communication in WhatsApp. For example, you can automatically mute calls from unknown numbers or set it so that only known contacts can add you to a group. When it comes to marketing spam, companies have stricter rules.
