Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said that if elected, he would ask Elon Musk for a cabinet or advisory position and would eliminate a $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles that he called “ridiculous.”

“Tax credits and tax breaks are generally not a good thing,” Trump told Reuters in an interview after a campaign event in York, Pennsylvania, when asked about the electric car credit.

If elected, Trump could take steps to roll back Treasury Department rules that made it easier for automakers to take advantage of the $7,500 loan, or he could ask Congress to repeal it entirely.

As president, Trump tried to repeal the electric vehicle tax credit, which was later expanded by President Joe Biden in 2022.

“I’m not making any final decisions on that,” Trump said of the electric vehicle tax credit. “I’m a big fan of electric cars, and gas cars, and hybrids, and everything else that comes along.”

He added that he would scrap current government rules requiring carmakers to produce more electric and hybrid vehicles to meet stricter emissions standards.

Trump also said that if elected, he would reach out to Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla. CLAA.Oto a cabinet or advisory position, “if he agrees.”

Musk publicly endorsed Trump in the US presidential race last month.

Trump also said Monday that he would take steps to try to restrict the export of vehicles made by Detroit’s three automakers and others from Mexico to American consumers by imposing new tariffs. (Reuters).
