It’s been barely two and a half months since Disney+ released The Acolytehis most recent production based on the Star Wars universe. As you may recall, we covered its premiere in our second June weekly special on all the major movie and TV on demand platforms and found it interesting enough that it was chosen to star in said sequel.

As we have already told you, its history Set approximately a century before the rise of the Empirefar from the last conflicts the republic faced. However, the Jedi Council does not let up its vigilance against any possible threat, and is quick to react to signs that something very bad might be about to happen. Signed by the very solvent Lesly Headland, it had a very heterogeneous cast, in which we found everything from undisputed stars like Carrie-Anne Moss to promising performers like Dafne Keen.

How could it not be otherwise, having such an ethnically and physically heterogeneous cast, provoked the already traditional review the bombing of four idiots who think diversity in the Star Wars universe is something that only happens for a quarter of an hour. But other than that, the general reception, both by the public and critics, has been quite positive. Not exceptional (it’s getting harder to be), but good, good work worthy of expansion.

Disney+ is canceling The Acolyte

However, the numbers were responsible for ending that option. As we read in The Verge, Disney+ canceled The Acolyte, leaving unanswered questions left open at the end of the first one. Reason? It seems that the numbers achieved by the series did not meet the expectations of the platform executives. And this, together with high production costs, made its continuity impossible.

This issue of series cancellations, both in general and on streaming platforms in particular, is one that is occasionally discussed when it occurs, but has not yet been addressed in the necessary depthand that’s the problem. Obviously, platforms have no legal obligation to close anything they open, argumentatively speaking, but they should feel some level of obligation to their users, the paying subscribers, who become interested in the series, start watching it, and can spend a year waiting for a resolution cliffhangers employees, so that the said production does not fall into oblivion during all that time.

I don’t have data on the audience The Acolyte has reached, but given the conversation around it during the month of June, I’d bet the data is positive. And now Disney+, which has been mired in a price-gouging foray for several years and is already threatening to crack down on shared accounts, is once again leaving behind all those people who watched the first series and were waiting for the second. And if that’s not a lack of respect for your subscribers, then I’m not sure what is..

On the other hand, without any relation to the above, I do not want to not mention how well exchange networks work to share content over the Internet.
