The United States imposed sanctions on former Haitian President Michel Joseph Martelly on Tuesday for drug trafficking.accusing him of playing a major role in perpetuating the country’s current crisis.

This is stated in a message from the Ministry of Finance. Martelly “abused his influence to facilitate the trafficking of dangerous drugs, including cocaine, destined for the United States.”

He added that Martelly also worked with Haitian drug traffickers and sponsored several gangs. and was involved in laundering proceeds from drug trafficking.

Michel Martelly, the President of Haiti, suffered a pulmonary embolism while hospitalized in Miami, the Haitian government said in a statement.

Bradley Smith, acting undersecretary of the Treasury for counterterrorism and financial intelligence, said in a statement:

Today’s action against Martelly highlights the significant and destabilizing role he and other corrupt political elites have played in perpetuating the current crisis in Haiti.
