Devoting a significant amount of time each night to reading is one of those pleasures that is hard to describe, especially when you spend most of your day in front of a screen. But to be honest, you don’t always have the desire, energy, or focus to get in a good day of reading.

Audiobooks have been around for a long time as an alternative. In fact, it’s an emerging market. The problem? Not all books have audiobook versions, and the tools I’ve discovered so far, at least, only narrate the text we’re presented with in a robotic, artificial way.

Eleven Labs wanted to hit the table. It launched an application that can narrate articles in PDF, ePub or other text format. You choose any of the voices that make up the application (some are Spanish voices) and our book instantly becomes an audiobook.

The app is called Eleven Reader: AI Audio and is available for free for iOS and Android. You do need to register to use it, yes. The developers tell us that they plan to release some premium features but that the features are completely free “in the meantime.” In other words, Let’s benefit from the party without paying.

The way the app works is brutal, as it not only lets you upload text files in ePUB and PDF format, but also lets you import links and even scanned image content. We can also copy and paste any text.

In the playback section we can play the newly converted audiobook with the screen locked or read it while it is narrated to us. The application distinguishes between sections so that we can go directly to the section we want. Similarly, we can play the content at 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x and 2x.

The key to the app is naturalness. It’s not perfect, and it doesn’t perfectly mimic the natural rhythm of the human voice in the best audiobooks, but it’s far from terrible. The Loquendo effect problem that other text-to-speech tools have. In my case, I chose the voice of “Sara Martin” and I’m quite happy with the result.
