The Security Center of the QTS operating system for Qnap NAS devices receives ransomware protection. This upgrade is part of QTS 5.2, in which the Security Center received a major upgrade.
Ransomware Protection monitors your NAS and can detect suspicious activity. In this case, the tool can automatically put the volumes selected by the user into read-only mode. Snapshots are also paused in this case to prevent the storage from filling up with irrelevant snapshots. This way, classic ransomware attacks are blocked.
This protection is a welcome improvement, as NAS devices in general and Qnap copies in particular have been popular targets for hackers in the past, who are only too happy to exploit a leak to break into Qnap systems, which by definition contain valuable data.
The NAS devices are also particularly popular with prosumers and SMEs, which reduces the chance of a robust backup strategy or advanced detection. In other words, the impact of a ransomware attack can be significant. QTS 5.2 is designed to prevent damage from becoming irreparable if a hacker manages to gain access in the future.
If you own a NAS from Qnap or any other manufacturer, prevention is always better than cure. Don’t just connect your NAS to the Internet using port forwarding, change the default ports if necessary, disable unused connectivity features, and make sure all software and firmware are always up to date. Qnap also offers MFA for its accounts, so be sure to enable it.
