BMW overtakes Tesla to take lead in European electric car market

For the first time in history BMW passed Tesla’s CarScoops and JATO Dynamics reported that Europe led the electric car market. BMW delivered 14,869 electric cars to Europe in July, followed by Tesla with 14,561. BMW increased its sales by 35% year-on-year, taking the number one spot in the European electric car market for the first time.


Tesla Model YIt retains its title as the most popular electric car in Europe, with 9,544 registrations, as before. The Volvo EX30 (6,573 units) and Volkswagen ID.4 (5,295 units) took second and third place respectively, while the Tesla Model 3 came in fourth with 4,694 units.

Transition BMW iX1 The recently updated BMW i4 Gran Coupe ranked sixth and seventh in this month’s all-electric model rankings with sales of 4,305 and 4,198 units respectively.

Overall, car sales in Europe reached 1.03 million units in July, up 2% on last year. However, sales of fully electric vehicles fell 6% (139,300 registrations) and their market share fell to 13.5%.
