While Android Auto is my favorite car infotainment system, it does have some room for improvement, and one thing I’d definitely like to see is it let you do more things while the car is parked. Think of a campsite, a van to sleep in, waiting around when you meet someone, or if you need to kill time until your daughter gets home from soccer class: it would be ideal in that scenario. Ability to watch videos on Android Auto.
Let’s see, technically you can watch videos on Android Auto, but the main video and streaming applications are not compatible, I’m talking about YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, Max … Thanks to the advantage of this screen on the front of your car, you can watch everything you want, from your favorite series to your team’s league match, without too many special complications (because yes, it is possible to watch Netflix on Android Auto, but it is a headache). But I found a good balance between ease of installation and a good experience in terms of utility: This is how I see DTT and YouTube channels on my Android Auto’s screen.
Watch YouTube on Android Auto
To watch YouTube on Android Auto, simpler, more functional and without the need for rooting or anything weird to ensure that the system is updated and to use the open source Android Auto Apps Downloader application. To have it on your mobile phone, simply go to GitHub and download the APK after accepting the relevant permissions. AAAD allows you to launch other applications that are compatible with the Google infotainment system but do not have the Android Auto certification.
One of the AAAD apps available is CarStream, which is interesting for watching YouTube on Android Auto. Just choose a version from the list and the installation starts without much mystery beyond giving permission. In general, it always works well and is safe, but there may be a problem with the software and it may not work as it should (in which case, try installing another version. Then, You will see CarStream with the YouTube logo in the Android Auto interface Once you connect your mobile phone to the car: you can now play your videos.
View DTT channels on Android Auto
Like on your own It is not possible to watch TV on Android Auto, it remains to use an alternative application platform, in this case AAStore. The procedure is similar to the previous one: we go to the GitHub repository and, after accepting the installation permissions from unknown sources, we download the latest stable version in APK format.
Once you install AASTore on your mobile, you will see a list of available applications: this time the one that interests us is IPcarTV. We enter it, click on ‘Install’ and after accepting the permissions, we have it App that lets you read IPTV lists on Android AutoThis is the true origin of these channels.
There’s a long list of IPTV lists you can add (pardon the redundancy), but I particularly like the one from TDT Channels or the complete IPTV foundation available on GitHub. You’ll need the link to copy and paste it into IPCarTV.
As part of IPCarTV we will:Playlist and favorite channel manager‘ and ‘+’ we give a name and paste the link. Then tap on ‘Next‘ and that’s it: the next time you open IPCarTV on Android Auto, you’ll have the channels you can watch from the car screen. The app works well, it’s fluid and the audiovisual experience is excellent (although it doesn’t play content in full screen, leaving a lower bar).
