Nicoleta Rotaru’s death in Italy a year ago was classified as a suicide, but a recording she made on her phone the night of the incident and recently played by investigators now points to her husband as the possible culprit.

The husband has been arrested and transferred to a prison in the city of Padua and is due to appear before a judge on September 17, the newspaper Il Corriere della Sera reported on Saturday.

Nicoleta Rotaru, of Moldovan origin, was found dead in the bathroom of her home in Abano Terme (north) on the night of August 2, 2023, with a belt around her neck after her husband, a truck driver by profession, alerted the police. The emergency services reported that she had been locked in for two hours and was unresponsive.

The medical examiner who performed her autopsy then ruled the cause of death to be “probable suicide” because, among other signs, she was found locked inside the bathroom.

However, the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) staff doubted this version, especially since they knew that the woman had been subjected to cruel treatment in the past, and also because the rescuers managed to open the bathroom door without much effort.

The reopening of the case, which was desired by the victim’s relatives and friends who were unable to explain the tragedy, was made possible by an analysis of her mobile phone, the voice recorder of which she allegedly turned on when she noticed the violence from her partner.

According to the newspaper, the phone eventually recorded a violent fight with her husband, with insults, threats and noises of alleged attacks that investigators now consider “consistent with homicide,” allowing the case to be reopened.
