With the launch of the Reno 12 F 5G, Oppo continues its breakthrough in the mid-range segment

Oppo launches the Reno 12 F 5G. The device appears in our country barely five months after its predecessor and increases Oppo’s presence in the mid-range segment.

Since Oppo has once again focused on Europe and Belgium, it has been raining down on numerous launches. The Reno 11 F was only presented to us at the end of April this year, followed by the Reno 12 (Pro) in mid-June. Now Oppo is presenting us with the Reno 12 F. Somewhat surprisingly, this device has a lower recommended retail price than the Reno 11F and costs 399 euros including VAT.

For the money, you get a 6.67-inch device (20:9) with a robust battery and a large round camera module that is visually reminiscent of the cameras on the latest OnePlus smartphones and the Oppo Find X7, which is not yet released here. The interior is modest but balanced:

  • 6.67 inch 20:9 screen (OLED)
  • 1,080 x 2,400 – 120 Hz
  • MediaTek Dimensity 6300
  • 8GB RAM
  • 256GB storage
  • 5,000 mAh battery
  • 50 MP main camera
  • 8 MP wide-angle camera
  • 2 MP macro camera
  • 32 MP selfie camera
  • 45 watts charging (USB-C PD2.0)
  • IP64

Light ring

Oppo integrates some unique features into this device. For example, the large camera island has a light ring that can display different effects. For example, the ring lights up when notifications are received, or it can light up to the rhythm of the music. You will also find various AI-related features on this smartphone. For example, you can easily remove objects from photos or create summaries of shots.

Oppo is confident that the device is robust. The IP64 rating implies that rain and dust are not a problem, but theoretically you can also drop the device on the ground with impunity.

Oppo is not directly targeting business users with the Reno 12 F. For example, we read in the press release that you can stream on TikTok for 13.95 hours without interruption on one battery charge. We assume that the battery will also support other activities without any problems.

Update problems

As with other recently launched devices, Oppo makes a very strange choice with the Reno 12 F. The manufacturer guarantees optimal battery performance for four years, but only offers two years of Android updates and three years of security updates. So after three years, this device is ready for recycling in terms of software, while the hardware is ready for another year.

The modest support promise is all the more painful considering that Oppo promises that the device will continue to run smoothly for at least another 50 months. Oppo is doing almost everything it can to make this device a guaranteed solid investment for a four-year period, but it stumbles before the finish line. TikTok’s target audience may be (wrongly) less concerned about this, but from a business perspective, the update policy is truly a disgrace. Hopefully, security updates will continue to arrive longer than planned.

In addition, on paper, the Oppo Reno 12 F seems to be a well-balanced device for the money. We wouldn’t expect too much from the macro and wide-angle cameras, but otherwise the manufacturer has an interesting all-rounder on offer.
