The Japanese company has confirmed that it is going to raise the price of the PS5 by 20%, a measure it had to take due to external difficulties, including significant economic fluctuations.
For now, this price increase will only apply to Japan, where the optical drive version of the PS5 will go from ¥66,980 to ¥79,980, matching the current change to $460 and $550, respectively. So there will be a price increase 90 dollars.
Japan was one of the countries where it was the cheapest to buy this console, while in Europe it is the opposite, as the recommended price of PS5 with optical drive in Spain is 549.99 euros. That’s $614.19which means we’ll pay $64.9 more for the Sony console.
The price of the digital version of this console will increase from ¥59,980 ($415) to ¥72,980 (505 dollars). The exchange rate is equivalent to 371.63 euros and 452.22 euros.
Sony has confirmed another price hike that affects the entire ecosystem of peripherals surrounding the PS5. The DualSense controller will cost $65 for $65. 80 dollars to exchange (71.64 euros). The PlayStation Portal system will go up from 205 to 240 dollars (214.92 euros).
This isn’t the first time Sony has raised the price of the PS5 in Japan. The Japanese company already did this at the end of 2022 and with this new increase, the purchase of this console in this country today $205 more expensive than when it launched nearly four years ago in the case of the optical drive version and $185 more expensive if we are talking about the digital version.
At the moment there is no indication that this price increase will spread to other markets, but there is nothing that allows us to ensure that this will not happen, so We cannot rule out this possibility.. It’s strange that this price increase happened so close to the PS5 Pro, it will be interesting to see how it affects the price of said console, but with the current panorama, I think it could be much more expensive than expected.
Sony’s latest financial results confirmed the growing loss of interest in the PS5, but despite everything, it remains the best-selling console of its generation and is in such a comfortable position that Sony can afford to raise the price several years after release. That shows us how important it is to have real competition.
