Risk of use nuclear weaponswhether it be for accidentally or intentionallyit became “unacceptably high”the deputy secretary general warned today UN Disarmament AffairsIzumi Nakamitsu at the international conference on nuclear-weapon-free zones in the capital of Kazakhstan.

“Everyone understands that the risk of nuclear weapons being used, whether intentionally, by mistake or unsuccessfully, has become unacceptably high. One wrong step can plunge us into the abyss“, he pointed out.

He added that in this context, interest has increased strengthen the current nuclear-weapon-free zones and in the creation of new ones, among which he named the Arctic, Northeast Asia and Central Europe.

“The creation of a new zone in the Middle East must continue to be a priority,” he said, stressing that it was in this region that the devastating humanitarian crisis had erupted in Gaza Strip and the risks of escalation increase the importance of creating nuclear-free zone.

For this reason, he called on nuclear powers to show leadership and “at least participate in dialogue understand that they, too, can do something” to reduce the risks of nuclear weapons use.

Nakamitsu recalled that the last zone declared free of nuclear weapons was Central Asia, 2006and said, “We cannot let it be the last.”

In turn, the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Akan Rajmetulin, confirmed that at present “all norms of the world order are called into question” and “ geopolitical confrontationerosion of international norms and the lack of dialogue is unprecedented“.

He emphasized Astana’s ongoing efforts to achieve disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons at the global and regional levels.

“30 years ago, our country joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons after the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear site and rejection of the Soviet nuclear legacy on our territory“he reminded.

The Agreement on the Establishment of a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia was signed in 2006 in Semipalatinsk by five countries in the region and ratified by four nuclear powers: Great Britain, China, Russia and France.

Kazakhstan continues consultations with United States for possible ratification.
