He Former President of Uruguay Jose Mujica (2010-2015) was hospitalized on Tuesday at the Casmu Sanatorium in Montevideo for treatment of a malignant tumor found in his esophagus.

This was reported by the local press, which emphasized that the ex-president is expected to discharged after 24 or 48 hours.

This Monday, his doctor Raquel Pannone told the agency. EFE that Mujica had a “very good” evolution after treatment for the tumor, despite the fact that rehabilitation “costs him a lot.”

“Rehabilitation is very expensive for him. He underwent radiation therapy, and this caused some symptoms that he does not completely overcome. This is not due to his underlying disease or any other complications. On the contrary, regarding the esophageal tumor, the evolution was very good,” the doctor emphasized.

However, he added that the treatment is not harmless and that Mujica has other pre-existing pathologies that are causing it. “We are monitoring him and doing everything possible so that he can recover,” Pannone concluded.

Mujica announced at a press conference on April 29 that he had a tumor in his esophagus.

“I have to tell you that last Friday I went to Kasma (Hospital Center) for a check-up, during which it turned out that I have a tumor in my esophagus, which is obviously very serious and in my case is doubly complicated, because I have been suffering from an immunological disease for more than 20 years,” he said.

“We had high suspicions that it was a malignant tumor because of the characteristics seen in the image. Evidence showing pathological anatomy. “Pepe has esophageal cancer,” he emphasized.

He immediately noted that the tomography and ultrasound he performed on the former president showed that he had no damage to any other organ.

On the other hand, thanking Uruguay and other countries for their offers, he noted that together with Mujica and his wife, former Vice President Lucia Topolansky, they decided that the treatment would be carried out in their country.
