Trend Micro is introducing new technologies for both businesses and consumers to detect and stop deepfakes and other forms of cyberattacks.

Trend Micro reports that cybercriminals are increasingly turning to AI tools that have become cheaper and more accessible. This makes it easier for attackers to launch large-scale attacks and deceive victims with deepfakes for purposes such as extortion, identity theft, and fraud. Trend Micro is responding with new detection technologies that detect and stop AI fraud, for both enterprise and consumer environments.

The new deepfake detection technology, soon available on the Trend Vision One platform, uses advanced methods to detect AI-generated content. This technology will be available to consumers in the form of the Trend Micro Deepfake Inspector. These solutions go beyond traditional techniques such as image noise analysis and color detection by also analyzing behavioral elements. This provides a stronger approach to detecting deepfakes. When a deepfake is detected, the company’s security teams are immediately alerted so they can take appropriate action.

Increase in deepfake incidents

A recent survey by Trend Micro shows that 71 percent of consumers view deepfakes as a negative development, primarily because they are used for fraud. In addition, 36 percent of respondents say they have already experienced a scam attempt using a deepfake. The FBI has also warned against using deepfake technology in video calls, as attackers use it to manipulate company emails or fraudulently apply for a remote job.

The Trend Micro Deepfake Inspector provides real-time analytics during video calls and alerts users when the person on the call is not who they appear to be, helping users identify potential scammers and prevent further harm.

Comprehensive approach to AI threats

In addition to deepfake detection, Trend Micro is also working on other solutions as part of its Zero Trust strategy, including controls over employee GenAI usage, content filtering to meet compliance requirements, and protection against Large Language Models (LLMs) attacks. This is in line with Trend Micro’s broader mission to secure its customers’ AI journey and protect them from the new threats posed by AI.

The Deepfake Inspector is a free solution that runs locally on the user’s device, ensuring data and privacy protection at all times. With these and other new solutions, Trend Micro aims to better protect both businesses and consumers against the rapidly evolving threats in the digital landscape.
