550 million calculations per second: Finland launches Europe’s fastest supercomputer

Europe’s fastest and most energy-efficient supercomputer, called LUMI, was launched in Kajaani, Finland.

As Ukrinform reports, Yle reports.

The LUMI computer is also the third most powerful computer in the world.

Margrethe Westager, vice-president of the European Commission for Digital Technology (EuroHPC), said LUMI’s enormous computing power will “serve scientific breakthroughs in medicine and climate research, for example,” such as in vaccine development, cancer diagnosis or climate change mitigation.

LUMI is a joint project of EuroHPC and a consortium of 10 European countries, including Finland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway. Finland pays a quarter of the cost of the project, which is 200m euros.

“This is a great example of the enormous potential of artificial intelligence to improve our lives,” Vestager said. Said.

The expected maximum power of the LUMI will be 550 petaflops – 550 million calculations per second. Computing power will complement existing EuroHPC supercomputers: Discoverer in Bulgaria, MeluXina in Luxembourg, Vega in Slovenia and Karolina in the Czech Republic. The high-end supercomputer contains thousands of processors running in parallel, delivering results over 10 million times the computing power of simple laptops.

LUMI uses free cooling systems and its waste heat will provide 20% of district heating in Kajaani, where the supercomputer is located.

As reported by Ukrinform, Meta Platforms, the parent company of the social network Facebook, presented a supercomputer with artificial intelligence AI Research SuperCluster (RSC).
