Margrethe Westager, vice-president of the European Commission for Digital Technology (EuroHPC), said LUMI’s enormous computing power will “serve scientific breakthroughs in medicine and climate research, for example,” such as in vaccine development, cancer diagnosis or climate change mitigation.
LUMI is a joint project of EuroHPC and a consortium of 10 European countries, including Finland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway. Finland pays a quarter of the cost of the project, which is 200m euros.

The expected maximum power of the LUMI will be 550 petaflops – 550 million calculations per second. The high-end supercomputer contains thousands of processors running in parallel, delivering results over 10 million times the computing power of simple laptops.
LUMI uses free cooling systems and its waste heat will provide 20% of district heating in Kajaani, where the supercomputer is located.
