X is working on its own video conferencing platform. For internal use or will it compete with Zoom and Microsoft Teams?
Employee Chris Park gives a first glimpse into the veil XConference on the social media platform we used to know as Twitter. X is testing a brand new video conferencing platform for internal meetings. CEO Elon Musk also confirmed this with an approving flame emoji.
Judging by the first screenshots, X Conference looks rather plain, but Park already dares to call it a “very good alternative” to Zoom and Microsoft Teams. There are still many features planned to make this statement come true, such as improved notifications, the ability to pin speakers, subtitles and spatial audio.
Competes with Zoom and Microsoft
What exactly X plans to do with the meeting platform is still unclear. The company has not yet communicated anything about a possible launch. Is the tool intended for internal use or will it compete entirely on the video conferencing market?
With Elon Musk, you never know what he’s up to: he’s often hinted that he wants to turn X into a “total app.” Live communication isn’t new territory for the company. You can already make audio calls through Spaces today. Video is just a small step away.
It remains to be seen whether there will be a big demand for another new video conferencing software. There are established values with Zoom, Teams and Google Meet, WhatsApp is becoming increasingly popular and there are platforms that are less known in our region such as AWS Chime and Cisco Webex. Most companies made their choice during the Corona pandemic and it seems unlikely that a new player can convince users to switch.
