As you may remember, last Sunday We were awakened by the news of the arrest of Pavel Durov, CEO and founder of Telegram, in France. This measure dictated by the French authorities immediately became an information bomb that spread like wildfire at the speed of light, initially leading to informative content, but also almost from the first moment to an analysis from very different points of view on what to think about this event, and its possible consequences.
Telegram is one of the most used instant messaging services in the world, and even if it is not the best choice in this sense (for example, we have Signal here), it should (and deserves) to consider whether it is a safer platform. and with more privacy control than WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, to name the two that top the charts of this type of platform. And not only thanks to its own design, but also because moderation controls are undoubtedly more lax.
This along with insufficient cooperation with the authoritiesis what led the French police to carry out an investigation (at the moment in the preparatory phase) which includes the arrest of Pavel Durov to hear his testimony. Since learning about it, we’ve been waiting to find out what will happen once the French authorities get all the information they need from Telegram’s founder and CEO.
Four days later we finally have information about it because, as we read in Le Monde, The French judiciary brought preliminary charges against Pavlo Durov, released him on bail and prohibited him from leaving France.. The bail imposed by the French authorities is five million euros and the impossibility to leave the country does not have a final date at the moment, as it is limited to the development of the investigation and possible charges that may result from the same. . To guarantee his stay in the country, the CEO of Telegram will have to report to the police station twice a week.
This matter, as stated at the beginning, has multiple interpretationsand caused a huge controversy on a global scale. The authorities argue that the only motivation for this investigation and preventive measures taken against Pavlo Durov is Telegram’s lack of cooperation with public authorities in prosecuting illegal activities on the platform. However, there are already many voices, surprisingly from all political backgrounds, who believe that there is a political motivation.
