The Israeli army and the Palestinian group Hamas have agreed to three three-day pauses in fighting in the Gaza Strip in selected areas to authorize the vaccination of about 640,000 children against polio, A senior WHO official announced this on Thursday.

Vaccinations, he said, would begin on September 1 in central Gaza with a three-day pause in hostilities, then move to southern Gaza, where there would be another three-day pause, and then to northern Gaza. Peperkorn added that there was an agreement to extend the humanitarian pause in each area to a fourth day if necessary.

The Gaza Ministry of Health, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA) and other partners are ready to administer more than 1.6 million doses of polio vaccine (type 2) to more than 640,000 children under the age of ten.

A total of 1.26 million doses are already in Palestine, with another 400,000 doses to be sent soon.

Peperkorn reiterated that for the campaign to be possible, a humanitarian pause is needed to not only distribute doses but also allow people and families to get to vaccination centres.
