Microsoft Edge will provide more control over RAM usage

Web browsers in general, and Microsoft Edge is no exception, They have a RAM consumption problemserious problem. And yes, if you thought about it, it is true that the gold medal in this sense, at least as far as public opinion is concerned, is that it happens mainly with Google Chrome. However, experience has shown us that this problem is not only experienced by the most used browsers, on the contrary, it is a relatively widespread problem.

Now, before we start charging ink against these apps, it’s also fair to acknowledge that this isn’t solely the responsibility of their creators. On the one hand, we have to reckon with it websites, and even more so services, are becoming more demanding every day in terms of the amount of memory required for proper display and operation. It is true that browsers can implement improvements that reduce this impact, but their capacity in this regard is limited.

Besides, We should not lose sight of the most common behavior of many usersand yes, I’m talking about opening tabs and more tabs and keeping them open so that (maybe, just maybe) you can check their contents at some point later. For unrelated reasons, I just checked and I have four browser windows open, totaling 43 tabs. The good thing is that I took the opportunity to close a few of them, but the bad thing is that this habit is (and not only in my case) much less common than opening them.

However, those from Redmond are determined to separate themselves from this image, the memory-intensive browser image, and as we can read in WindowsLatest, Microsoft is testing a more aggressive adjustment of RAM consumption with Microsoft Edge. More precisely, in this sense, we are facing a modification of the previous feature, which is currently in Edge Canary, that is, in the development version of the browser for those users who want to try it.

This feature consists of a drop down menu where we can choose from five options availablewhich we want to use for Microsoft Edge. As you have already seen in the picture, they are as follows:

  • Unlimited (16 gigabytes)
  • Minimum (8 gigabytes)
  • Medium (6 gigabytes)
  • Aggressive (4 gigabytes)
  • Very aggressive (2 gigabytes)

Two aspects in particular draw attention to this list. On the one hand, it is curious that the “Unlimited” mode is actually limited to 16 gigabytes. It is true that yes, we are talking about a huge amount, but it is still limited. Now the most notable is the “Very Aggressive” mode, because it is difficult to imagine a browser today with common usage habits, which gets by with just two gigabytes.
