Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a radio interview Friday that tycoon Elon Musk should abide by the country’s Supreme Court rulings on social media site X and asked him to take a “different position.”

“Any citizen from anywhere in the world who has investments in Brazil is subject to the Constitution and Brazilian laws,” he told local radio after Musk refused to comply with court orders to remove content from X, formerly known as Twitter.

The president added that the social media owner, who is close to the Brazilian right, must “accept the rules” and that just because he has a lot of money, he cannot “disrespect” and “insult” the country’s authorities.

Musk followed up this morning by posting the attacks on

De Moraes leads the investigation into the spread of fake news on X and has ordered content removal on several occasions for this reason, leading to a dispute with Musk.

After the tycoon refused to comply with orders, a magistrate raised the possibility of jailing the company’s legal representatives, to which Musk responded by closing the office in Brazil.

On Wednesday, De Moraes ordered the businessman to appoint a legal representative in Brazil within 24 hours to comply with court orders and pay fines imposed on X in the country.

Musk refused and accused the magistrate of freezing the bank accounts of another of his companies, satellite internet company Starlink, to ensure payment.

In addition, the businessman suggested that X’s activities would be suspended in the country, where the social network has about 20 million active users.
