Downed Russian drone classified in ZSU’s Nikolaev region

In the Nikolaev region, the air defense of Ukraine shot down a unique Russian drone. The defeat was reported by the Airborne Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. With the help of this drone, the Russian military tried to conduct aerial reconnaissance to repel the counterattack attacks of the Ukrainian forces.

The Russian drone shot down by the Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile unit is considered classified and has no known official name. This unique drone is often confused with another Russian Orlan-10 drone. Externally, the UAV really looks like Orlan family aircraft, but there are a number of differences.

The drone is equipped with a 12-lens camera for panoramic aerial and video capture with the ability to transmit the collected information to the control point in real time. Some components of the UAV, including the optoelectronic system, are manufactured by a Russian company under US sanctions and working with the Orlan UAV manufacturer. The drone model is not used by the Russian Ministry of Defense, possibly by the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation.

It is known that in 2013 Russia’s Federal Security Service tested unmanned aerial vehicles with 80 megapixel cameras and thermal cameras to create quick plans for the area during special operations. At that time, the FSB used AFM-Servers’ Ptero-SM. The downed UAV is likely to be the same “stealth model” for the FSB from the AFM Servers.

The assumptions are based on the following facts:

  • AFM-Servers has been in close cooperation with the FSB since 2013.
  • The design features of the Ptero line repeat the features of planes crashed in Ukraine and Turkey.
  • the geography of aircraft losses corresponds to the geography of war crimes committed by Russia (Ukraine, Syria)
  • UAVs use Russian satellite navigation system
  • Information about this UAV is not available to the public, which allows you to use it in “sensitive” operations and not worry about determining membership in case of loss.

The first use and destruction of a Russian drone of this model was recorded in 2014. Source
