The Venezuelan prosecutor’s office on Monday requested a court specializing in crimes of “terrorismissue an “arrest order” for the standard-bearer of the largest opposition coalition, Edmundo González Urrutia, for “allegedly committing crimes of usurpation of functions” and “forgery of a public document” in relation to the election protocols of the July 28 presidential elections.
The request was made after the Prosecutor’s Office summoned González Urrutia three times, and his opponent decided not to appear, not knowing in what capacity he should appear and not admitting the crimes that the Prosecutor’s Office (MP) attributes to him.
According to a document from the fiscal department dated today, the anti-Chavista is also accused of “incitement to disobey the laws,” “conspiracy,” and “sabotage with the aim of damaging systems and associations (with the aim of committing a crime).”
The investigation into González Urrutia stems from the publication of a website in which the main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), claims to have uploaded “83.5% of the electoral records” collected by witnesses and table members on election night to support its complaint of fraud in the presidential election.
Edmundo Gonzalez (Venezuela) reported on August 25:
The PUD published this protocol, which the executive branch calls “false”, after the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the elections, which was questioned by many countries, some of which support González Urrutia’s victory by a wide margin.
Last Thursday, when the third summons was issued, prosecutors warned that if he failed to appear again, “an appropriate arrest warrant would be issued” given that he was “at risk of flight.”
On August 25, the day the first summons was issued, González Urrutia said in a video posted on social media that the deputy “intends to interrogate him without specifying under what conditions he should appear and conduct a preliminary qualification of the crimes.” “No crimes have been committed.”
In his view, Attorney General Tarek William Saab has “repeatedly behaved like a political prosecutor,” as he claimed “he condemns in advance and now advances a challenge without guarantees of independence and due process.” EFE
