GeForce RTX 5080, more powerful than GeForce RTX 4090 and with lower consumption

According to the latest NVIDIA rumors consumption had to increase GeForce RTX 50, although at the moment it seems that only two models are affected, the GeForce RTX 5080 and the GeForce RTX 5090. The former is one of the most interesting models of the new generation, as it could achieve a significant jump in performance while maintaining a significant improvement effectiveness.

In the previous information, I saw that the GeForce RTX 5080 will have a consumption similar to the GeForce RTX 4080, which means that it will be about between 320 watts and 350 watts. Now the latest information says that this graphics card will consume 400 watts. The difference is not too big, because we are talking about 50 watts more than expected.

Talking about consumption is important, but it is pointless if we do not relate it to another important value, performance. I already told you that GeForce RTX 5080 could have an approximate performance of 90.11 TFLOPs in FP32, and which would therefore be slightly more powerful than the GeForce RTX 4090, whose performance is 82.58 TFLOPs.

The latest rumors point in exactly that direction, which they say this graphics card will be 10% more powerful than the GeForce RTX 4090. This generational leap would be slightly smaller than that of the GeForce RTX 4080, which averaged 14% more performance than the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti at 4K.

If confirmed, the GeForce RTX 5080 would be more powerful than the GeForce RTX 4090 and consumes 50 watts less, and would have 35% more performance than the GeForce RTX 4080 while consuming 80 watts more. These numbers clearly show that its power-to-watt ratio will not be as bad as it seems at first glance, if confirmed.

In the case of the GeForce RTX 5090, the increase in consumption would be much larger, from that would go from 450 watts to 600 watts. Compared to the GeForce RTX 4090, the difference in consumption would be 150 watts more and the performance improvement would be between 30% and 40%.

Possible price and release date of GeForce RTX 5080 and GeForce RTX 5090

All the information I’ve seen and the sources I was able to talk to a while ago led me to understand that the GeForce RTX 5080 and GeForce RTX 5090 presentations will take place at the end of this year, and that it will be launched between the months of September and October.

However, in recent weeks I had the feeling that this was not going to happen and that NVIDIA might have delayed the launch of the GeForce RTX 50 to first quarter of 2025. The latest rumors seem to be pointing in that direction as well, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens, as I don’t dare take anything for sure right now.

Regarding the price of both graphics cards, I am convinced of this They will cost the same or slightly more than the GeForce RTX 4080 and GeForce RTX 4090 at the time of their launch. This will also depend on what AMD does and the actual competition NVIDIA has from it and Intel.
