According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters.
This process is offered by special services as a precautionary measure to prevent Russian hackers from activating “hacked” devices on a “botnet” – a corrupt computer network that can bombard other servers with unauthorized traffic.
“Fortunately, we were able to destroy this botnet before it was used,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The botnet was controlled by malware called Cyclops Blink, which was attributed to Sandworm, one of Russia’s hacking groups involved in cyber attacks.
Cyclops Blink is designed to hack WatchGuard Technologies and Asus. The program gives Russian services access to these corrupt systems.
FBI Director Chris Vrey told reporters that the FBI has infiltrated thousands of routers and firewalls to remove malware and reconfigure devices with court permission.
“We’ve removed malware from devices used by thousands of businesses to ensure worldwide network security,” Vrey said. “We closed the doors that the Russians broke.”
As Ukrinform reported, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression, more than 120 strong cyberattacks on the resources of state officials and the military administration of Ukraine were immediately detected and neutralized.
