World Health Organization (WHO) resumed this Thursday controversy over Chinese authorities’ lack of transparency about the origins of the virus that caused the Covid-19 pandemicensuring that unless they are more transparent, the origins of this health crisis will remain a mystery.

“If China doesn’t share its data, the origins of Covid-19 will remain completely unknown”This was stated by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at his weekly press conference.

“China’s cooperation is absolutely necessary to establish the origins, including information about the first cases, about the Huanan market (where these initial infections were recorded) and about the work being done in the Wuhan laboratories,” Tedros said, warning that until there is complete data, “all hypotheses are up in the air.”

During the pandemic, the theory that the coronavirus accidentally escaped from a Chinese biosafety lab was considered, which WHO experts who visited the Asian country to investigate the origins of the pandemic said was the least likely of the hypotheses, but not entirely ruled out.

The origins of the virus have been debated for years in China and countries such as the United States.whose authorities even turned to WHO prioritises laboratory leakwhich caused outrage among the Chinese communist regime.

Tedros brought the issue back into the debate by publishing guidance on Wednesday so that member states know what questions to look at when analysing the origins of new pathogens that could cause epidemics or pandemics.

“Understanding when, where and how outbreaks of pandemics and epidemics begin is very complex, but it is a scientific imperative to try to avoid others in the future,” Tedros said.
