If something works, why change it? That’s what the guys at GoPro must have thought when they launched the HERO13 Black, the annual update of one of the world’s references in action cameras and for the occasion offers the greatest innovation not in the camera itself, but in a range of accessories.
And despite a bigger battery, improved super slow motion features, GPS return or improved Wi-Fi, the big changes come from a new family of modular lenses which the manufacturer calls the HB series and which includes ultra-wide, anamorphic and macro filters, as well as a set of four ND (neutral density) filters designed to increase motion blur. All these accessories are optional and sold separately.
The new HB series lenses are waterproof and compatible with video processing HyperSmooth by GoPro. Crucially for non-professionals, the Hero 13 Black automatically adjusts camera settings, including resolution or frame rate. This means that the user may not be able to access certain shooting modes, speeds or resolutions if the lens is not supported. But it’s better to shoot something with a special lens, only to find out later that it’s a quality disaster or that the best parts were cut out.
The official specifications speak of few new features compared to the Hero12 Black, especially in optics. If some were expecting a new main lens with a larger sensor to improve low-light performance and image quality, they’ll have to settle for the familiar (yes, one of the best in its sector) 1/1.9” CMOS sensoraperture F2.5, 27.6 MP of active pixels and a maximum resolution that rises above 5K (5599 x 4927 pixels).
Among the new functions we can highlight increased battery capacity to 1900 mAh. It features a redesigned connector specifically for this HERO13 Black, offering improved efficiency and longer usage time and up to 2.5 hours of continuous recording. To say that the Enduro battery for the HERO13 Black is not compatible with previous GoPro cameras.
Fortunately, GPS also returned. This means you’ll be able to search for images based on location, as well as your own recorded telemetry data such as speed, route and altitude, incorporate them into video files, and then bring it all to life with overlay graphics added through the app. Quick by GoPro.
There are other improvements here and there, such as better thermal performance when the camera is both static and moving or supports WiFi 6with which content can be wirelessly transferred up to 40 percent faster to a smartphone. The camera has a new system magnetic charging and cable which looks very functional, with a pogo-pin closure and charging or powering from external USB-C batteries or an adapter plugged into a mains supply.
GoPro has kept the price of the HERO13 Black compared to the latest version, 399 dollars in the international market and 449 euros in Spain. It will be available in the coming weeks, although it can be pre-ordered now.
