Lenovo presents business laptops with AMD and ARM engines

Lenovo is launching several new devices for the business market. The announcement is notable because Intel does not play a leading role in it, but AMD and Qualcomm do.

Lenovo is presenting several new laptops on the sidelines of the IFA in Berlin. In the ThinkPad portfolio, the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD. For the SME market, Lenovo is offering a ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 and Gen 7+. None of the three laptops has an Intel chip on board. This is important because Intel traditionally dominates business portfolio announcements.

ThinkPad T14s

The ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD (pictured above) has, as the name suggests, an AMD processor on board. The laptops can be configured with CPUs from the AMD Ryzen AI 300 series. AMD’s latest mobile processors are based on the brand new Zen 5 architecture.

In addition, the laptop can be configured with up to 64 GB of LPDDR5x memory. Wifi 7 and 5G (optional) are available. In addition, AMD has integrated classic USB-A ports as well as USB-C with Thunderbolt 4. HDMI is also available.

The device has a 14-inch 16:10 screen and weighs 1.3 kg. According to Lenovo, the battery lasts up to seventeen hours on a single charge.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 AMD will be available from November 2024 at an expected starting price of 2,199 euros (plus VAT).

ThinkBook 16 Gen 7+

The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 7+ is also powered by AMD. You can configure this laptop up to the top model AMD Ryzen AI 9 365: a chip with ten processing cores and 20 threads, with a boost frequency of up to 5 GHz. For additional graphics performance, this laptop can be equipped with an AMD Radeon 880M GPU.

The laptop has a 16-inch screen with a 3.2K resolution and should last for seventeen hours of light work.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 7+ will be available from December 2024 at an expected starting price of 999 euros (plus VAT).

ThinkBook 16 Gen 7

Finally, there is the “normal” ThinkBook 16 Gen 7. This laptop has an ARM-based processor from Qualcomm on board. Lenovo opts for the recently announced Snapdragon X Plus 8-Core: a slightly lighter version of the Snapdragon

This laptop gets Microsoft’s Copilot+ label out of the box, which means you get access to some AI gimmicks. This label is exclusive to Snapdragon computers until November, but the limited features will also be available to compatible x86 systems starting in November.

This laptop also has a 16-inch screen. Lenovo has high expectations for the battery. It would last several days.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 will be available from October 2024 at an expected starting price of 819 euros (plus VAT).

Still a bit of Intel

Lenovo isn’t leaving Intel completely out in the cold. The company is still announcing the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition. The Aura Edition brings some somewhat vague features that are supposed to help users in intelligent ways. This makes sharing files easier or the laptop remembering whether you want to blur the background or not.

The fact that Lenovo continues to highlight Aura with its consumer-focused Yoga laptops highlights that the business value is likely limited. We do not have a price or availability details for the ThinkPad X1 Aura Edition.
