Under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), WhatsApp and Meta allow third-party apps. Soon, chats from external apps can be integrated into these messaging platforms.

Earlier this year, we got a preview of WhatsApp’s Third Party Chats section. Users who enable this feature will receive messages from other platforms in a new section of their inbox. Meta has now revealed how third party chats will take shape in WhatsApp and Messenger. The changes will only apply to users from the European Union. The DMA does state that this must be accompanied by the necessary security measures in terms of end-to-end encrypted messages, which is already the case with WhatsApp.

WhatsApp opens its app to third parties

WhatsApp is making changes under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The European Commission has appointed six gatekeepers responsible for the so-called core platform services. WhatsApp and Messenger are currently on the list of messaging platforms.

Meta – Third Party Contributions

To comply with DMA rules, WhatsApp is making changes to interoperability between other messaging platforms. This includes text messages, images, voice messages, videos, and files sent from person A to person B. The change will allow users to send messages to contacts on WhatsApp through third-party apps such as iMessage and Google Messages.

New features

Users have the choice to separate their inbox from third-party apps or merge them. In addition to the basic features required for interoperability between messaging apps, it offers advanced messaging features such as replies, instant replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Meta also announced that it will add the option to create groups in 2025 and voice and video calls in 2027.

Interoperability versus security

The biggest challenge in moving to interoperability is security. Concerns are being raised about how Meta will keep its messages secure and encrypted when it integrates with other services.

WhatsApp wants the messaging services it partners with to use the same Signal protocol to encrypt messages. Meta would also be open to apps using alternative encryption protocols, as long as they can prove they meet WhatsApp’s security standards.
