One of the new features of Bluetooth 6.0 is so-called channel sounding. According to SIG, this function could determine the distance between two devices, such as an iPhone and an AirTag, at the centimeter level. To do this, it uses phase-based ranging to send radio signals between two devices at different frequencies so that the distance can be calculated.
The Find My Device feature could be significantly improved to make it easier to locate lost devices. Developers may soon integrate this feature into the Find My Device feature.
Channel sounding can also offer improvements in the area of ​​security. With more precise tracking information, developers can ensure that a device can only be unlocked when the digital key is within a certain range. This application is used, for example, to unlock a car. Bluetooth 6.0 is not yet supported by devices.
