Apple gives the iPhone 16 Pro a larger screen and a better battery

With the iPhone 16 Pro, Apple is focusing on creative users with numerous new high-end camera features. The price remains the same and starts at 1,229 euros.

In addition to the launch of the iPhone 16, Apple is also upgrading the Pro variant this year. The most important external change is undoubtedly the larger size. The screen of the iPhone 16 Pro grows from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches. It is striking that the large iPhone 16 Pro Max also grows from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches. Apple claims that the screen edges are thinner than ever, but that does not change the fact that the devices are getting bigger and bigger.

The chassis has been re-engineered from titanium to save weight. The action button, introduced last year, gets an extension with a touch button on the right side. You can operate the camera using haptic feedback to quickly take a photo or video. You can long-press the button to scroll through features by swiping. You can zoom by swiping without tapping. App developers get access to the button to develop their own interactions.

A18 Pro chip for AI

New year, new chip for the Pro model of the iPhone series. In terms of performance, Apple speaks of a limited jump in performance. The CPU delivers up to 15 percent more power, the GPU up to 20 percent more in the iPhone 16 Pro.

The focus is mainly on AI performance, more specifically Apple Intelligence. For example, you can use Apple Visual Intelligence with your phone by showing the iPhone something with the camera. The 16 neural cores in the A18 Pro chip have to process this at lightning speed. For now, this feature, like all other AI features, is not coming to Europe. Apple is doing this in protest against the rules of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), where Apple is designated as a gatekeeper and has to follow strict rules.

Focus on creative professionals

The three rear cameras are almost identical to those on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max. There’s a 48MP main camera, a new 48MP wide-angle camera, and a 12MP camera with 5x optical zoom. For the first time, the “small” Pro model has improved optical zoom. The cameras are now identical on both screen sizes.

The main new features are 4K 120 fps video recording and four microphones that Apple says deliver “studio quality.” The iPhone 16 Pro also lets you record voice memos with an audio track that you can overlay. There are also new photo styles that you can apply after you’ve taken the photo.

Much better battery

According to Apple, both iPhone 16 Pro models have a significantly better battery life. This is probably due to the slightly larger size due to the larger screens. The Pro Max version should allow video playback of up to 33 hours. The small Pro version reaches 27 hours.

They can now “fast charge” with up to 25 watts via MagSafe (Qi2 Wireless Charging). Both phones are again waterproof to IP68 and now also support Wi-Fi 7. Data transfer via the USB-C port is at USB 3.1 speed.

Price and availability

The two new Pro models can be ordered from September 13th. Delivery of the devices will begin on September 20th. Both have the same price as their predecessors. The iPhone 16 Pro (6.3 inches) is available from 1,229 euros in four titanium tones with 128 GB of storage. The top model with 1 TB of storage is available for 1,859 euros.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max (6.9 inches) starts at 1,479 euros with 256 GB storage. The most expensive version with 1 TB storage costs 1,979 euros.

All above prices include VAT.
