President of Chile, Gabriel Borichtook the lead this Wednesday events commemorating the 1973 coup d’etat and took the opportunity to emphasize that what happened 51 years ago, includingthe death of civilians and the bombing of the La Moneda Palace, should not be considered as “the only alternative.”

Borich responded directly with these statements to the leader of the Independent Democratic Union faction in the Chamber of Deputies, Guillermo Ramirez, who had slipped earlier, that The coup d’etat was “inevitable” and “the only way out” given the situation the country was in.

He also indicated that priority would be given to processing check approved ten years ago for exclude the application of amnesty, pardon and statute of limitations for crimes against humanity committed by state agents during the dictatorship.

We understand this action not only as an update of our human rights legislation, but also as an act of affirmation that crimes against humanity are necessary and that no law can eradicate them.

September 11, 1973 The government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in Chile. by the hand of the general, Augusto Pinochet, which would ultimately lead to the creation dictatorship from which the South American country could not free itself until 1990.

The dictatorship that Pinochet established under the pretext of “to restore the destroyed national institutions”which “de facto” allowed him to assume full powers at the head of the military junta.
