The Irish Data Protection Authority, which is responsible for enforcing the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is launching an investigation into Google. The data protection commission is questioning whether Google is complying with European rules when developing its AI models. More specifically, the European data protection supervisor is focusing on the PaLM 2 AI model, which forms the basis for Google’s chatbots.

This is not the first time that Big Tech companies have been investigated for illegally using personal data to train AI models. Regulators are sharply stepping up their investigations into these companies. If companies process personal data to train AI models, they must examine how they can mitigate privacy risks.

The European Data Protection Supervisor is now targeting Google’s AI model PaLM 2, which was launched in May 2023. The investigation will determine whether Google has breached its obligations under the GDPR regarding the processing of personal data of citizens in the EU and the European Economic Area.

Meta also recently halted its AI plans following various complaints. The company has gold in its hands when it comes to data with its social media platforms and believes that it is justified in using this data.
