He European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported a 50.6 percent increase in registered cases in August. (128 cases) compared with 85 cases registered in July, although the number of new infections in Europe remains relatively low.

From August 2024 to September 6, 2024 138 cases of mpox have been reported in 15 countries of the European Union or European Economic Area, with Spain being the country with the highest number of cases (43).They are followed by Germany (26), France (25), the Netherlands (17), Portugal (6), Belgium (3), the Czech Republic (3), Italy (3), Austria (2), Malta (2), Norway (2), Poland (2), Sweden (2), Ireland (1) and Romania (1).

As of September 6, 2024 A total of 889 cases of MPOC have been reported in the EU/EEA.

Since the start of the MIPC outbreak in 2022 and as of 6 July 2024, 22,870 confirmed MIPC cases have been reported in 29 EU/EEA countries: Spain (8,218), France (4,307), Germany (3,900), the Netherlands (1,327), Portugal (1,202), Italy (1,057), Belgium (814), Austria (350), Sweden (302), Ireland (250), Poland (225), Denmark (203), Norway (109), Greece (99), Hungary (85), Czech Republic (85), Luxembourg (61), Romania (48), Slovenia (47), Finland (43), Malta (37), Croatia (34), Iceland (17), Slovakia (16), Estonia (11), Bulgaria (7), Latvia (6), Cyprus (5) and Lithuania (5).

Countries reporting deaths: Portugal (2), Spain (3), Belgium (2), Austria (1) and Czech Republic (1). Information from Portugal has been corrected from previous reports as one case was incorrectly classified as a death.

Only one case of mpox caused by clade Ib MPXV has been reported in the EU/EEA – a new variant that emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo –: The Swedish case was reported in August. In this case, it was a person who had visited an African country. All other mpox cases reported in the EU/EEA were caused by mpox clade IIb, i.e. the same as in 2022.

Cases reported in 2024 have the same epidemiological profile as cases reported since the start of the outbreak in the EU and EEA, with 98.2 percent of men aged 29 to 49and sexual contact between men who have sex with men remains the main route of transmission.

On August 13, 2024, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared mpox a continental public health emergency. August 14, 2024. World Health Organization (WHO) convened a meeting of the IHR Emergency Committee to discuss mpox and declared the current outbreak of IPC caused by IPC clade I a public health emergency of international concern.

He The number of cases reported in August is similar to the level in January and February 2024 and significantly lower than those reported at the start of the outbreak in 2022. Thus, the overall risk of acquiring MPX infection is estimated to be low for men and very low for the EU/EEA population as a whole.

Response options for EU/EEA countries include: awareness of health workers; support sexual health services if cases are identified; continue to offer testing for orthopoxvirus; implement vaccination strategies; and maintain risk communication and public engagement despite declining incidence.

EU/EEA countries are also encouraged to sequence and report clades and subclades to identify new mpox cases, particularly those associated with clade Ib.
