The crew of private astronauts, the Polaris Dawn, is returning to Earth after an eventful five days in space that included the first commercial spacewalk. If all goes to plan, SpaceX’s Dragon Resilience capsule, which has had four people living in orbit for the past five days, will crash into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida’s Dry Tortugas. Sunday, September 15about 03:36 ET (07:36 GMT), says SpaceX in an update.
The landing will mark the end of Polaris Dawn, a mission to demonstrate the mobility and functionality of SpaceX’s new extravehicular activity (EVA) suit and the completion of the first spacewalk by a private citizen.
Coverage of Polaris Dawn’s return will begin about an hour before landing 02:36 ET (06:36 GMT) It will be available on the SpaceX X account page and the SpaceX Polaris Dawn mission page.
Polaris Dawn launched on Tuesday morning, September 10, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The mission is led (and funded) by billionaire philanthropist Jared Isaacman. Isaacman also piloted the first all-civilian space flight, Inspiration4, which flew aboard SpaceX’s Resilience Dragon capsule in 2021. This time, Isaacman was joined by mission pilot Scott “Kidd” Poteet and two SpaceX engineers, Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, as mission specialists.
