I Tried Gemini in Gmail and Won’t Go Back: AI Is Really Useful

With Google deploying its AI so massively, each of its applications will get a pinch of Gemini. Although it currently only works in English, Gmail is already integrated: I have been able to test it in Gmail for Android and the truth is that it offers a range of uses. expand your email horizons.

I’m not one of those who rely on AI to compose my emails, even though the apps I use outside of Gmail already have smart functionality. Personally, writing an email without outside help and expressing what I want to convey in characters seems to me to be the best way to communicate via email, but I know there will be those who will appreciate AI relieving them of the typing. Not only that, Gemini in Gmail goes far beyond just writing emails: it’s what I find most useful.

Gemini in Gmail not only writes emails, but also summarizes reply threads

Gemini Gmail

Google launched Gemini in tests on Gmail in May of this year. As of today, it’s rolling out to users in a very limited way, initially in the United States. It’s now available on Gmail in other countries, but it only works Change Gmail language to US EnglishI was only appreciated when I took this step.

When Gmail enables Gemini in the email app, the star AI feature will appear at the top of the screen, just to the right of the avatar (in the search field). Click on that icon Gemini can summarize daily and weekly email listVery useful for those of us who have a tray full of emails.

With a list of pending emails, it’s easy to stay up to date on important ones without having to sort through emails. Another feature I like about Gemini in Gmail is the ability to summarize communications. I have a really long email and I want to make sure it’s really important. I summarize and Geminis save me from reading crosswise.

Gemini can summarize a specific email and summarize the entire email chain. This makes it easy to find what’s important

In addition to summarizing a specific email, Gemini can also summarize the endless chain of replies that are contained within the email, which can cause a lot of work to locate a specific section. Don’t know which email they confirmed the address for dinner in? No more scrolling down to the end of the chain, Gemini sums up the whole issue the most important thing about email.

And yes: Geminis also write emails

Gemini Gmail

The smart summary functions are great and save a lot of time, but I also appreciate the ability to write emails strike the right tone Gemini is the best of the zodiac signs. And both writing from scratch and correcting what has already been written works really well.

  • Write from scratch. When you open a new draft, a pencil icon with a star and the text “Help me write” appears. I simply instruct Gemini on how I want the email so the AI can compose it on demand.
  • Suggested answers. Every time I open an email and click reply, Gemini suggests different responses that fit the context. I just have to choose one and the email is automatically generated; if I’m not convinced, I can change it, and Gemini never sends an automatic response.
  • Correction of written text. This is also very useful because there are times when I can’t find the tone I’m looking for in an email. So I can copy the text and activate Gemini to ask it to make corrections to make it more polite, more friendly, or more respectful. There’s no button in Gmail to correct what’s already written, but copy/paste works just as well.

Although English is required in Gmail for Gemini to be active, All requests can be made in SpanishThe text is returned in this language and written perfectly, so there is no more difficulty than if the interface were in another language.

A great plugin with only one drawback: privacy

Gemini Gmail

Gmail is no privacy champion, as this email app can read all incoming and outgoing emails. And everything I do with Gemini is recorded equally, no matter how much Google keeps data anonymous and it doesn’t train its AI through interactions — at least that’s what it says on its privacy page.

All interactions with Gemini require an active internet connection, and AI doesn’t work at the device level (even on phones like the Google Pixel 8 Pro, which the Gemini Nano integrates with), so texts are uploaded to Google servers, a delicate step for the most confidential emails.

Leaving aside the privacy implications that using Gmail already has, I think this email client brings a lot to Gemini, one of the most successful integrations I have seen. Writing emails is nice, but summarizing endless chains seems even better to me: it gives me life. For that alone, it is worth it.
