Today is the day. iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 are coming to Sequoia compatible devices, but many users will miss out on some of the most interesting new features. The European Union (EU) countries will be the most affected. Let’s remember that Apple has decided to postpone the launch of some of its functions in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Let’s look at this scenario in a little more detail.
Apple Intelligence. The long-awaited advancement of the Cupertino company in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) will not be available to anyone in the world today, Monday. To start using this feature in beta, we will have to wait for iOS 18.1, which is scheduled to be released in October. But that will not be enough. Our devices must be configured in the Siri language and the system language in the United States English.
Since we are talking about a trial version, we will have to continue to manually activate Apple Intelligence. To do this, we will have to enter Settings > Apple Intelligence and Siri. The next step is to click on the ‘Join the Apple Intelligence Waitlist’ option. Importantly, this deployment will not be limited to the United States, but will reach most parts of the world and will add languages over time.
The Cupertino company said Apple Intelligence will support English from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other variants in December. Languages like Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish will follow in 2024. It’s worth noting that, for now at least, the EU is excluded from the Apple Intelligence launch, so if you’re in that part of the world, you won’t be able to use the feature even if you have a supported language.
Apple has suggested in the past that it doesn’t believe Apple Intelligence could be ready for the EU this year, suggesting it could come out in 2024. Non-EU European countries like the UK and Switzerland will be able to enjoy Apple Intelligence early on, as long as you have a supported language setup, as it’s a language Apple has turned to and not covered by the broadcast restrictions.
iPhone Mirroring. This function is presented as one of the most interesting new features of macOS 15 Sequoia. It will allow us to see the screen of our iPhone with iOS 18 on our computer as a mirror. And not only that. We can also share and even transfer files. Bad news for EU users. This feature will be available almost everywhere in the world except for this region. It is expected to come later.
SharePlay Screen Sharing. The latest evolution of SharePlay allows us to share the screen of our iPhone with iOS 18 or our iPad with iPadOS 18 with another device. The other device will not only see what is on the screen, but will also be able to control it remotely, for example to provide technical service. This innovation will also be available in many parts of the planet outside the EU.
Both iOS 18, iPad OS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia still have many more functions to reach this area and you can examine them in detail from the links you can find in this article. Among these, we can highlight the ability of iPadOS 18 to work with alternative stores to the App Store.
