A bus carrying tourists from the Peruvian city of Aguas Calientes to the Machu Picchu monument was involved in an accident on Monday, injuring 20 tourists, including a group of Mexicans, Peruvian state television reported and official sources confirmed.
Judging by the images published, The bus fell from a slope about 15 meters high and car company employees, neighbors and agents tried to stop him from continuing down.
Eyewitnesses told local media that the driver became lost due to fog in the area, which also suffered a landslide caused by heavy rains.
The vehicle, belonging to the company Consettur Machupicchu SAC, is responsible for covering the Hiram Bingham route, which runs from the city of Aguas Calientes to the Inca citadel located at the top of the mountain.
The social health insurance company EsSalud reported this on social media.
“The patients were stabilized and discharged,” EsSalud said.
Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena reported on the same social network that a group of Mexican tourists were among the victims.
“An unfortunate accident in Machu Picchu (Peru) involving Mexicans. Our Mexican Embassy in Lima and our consular staff are already aware and are activating protection and assistance protocols,” Barcena said, before adding a phone number and email address for those affected.

The transport company said in a statement that the accident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. local time (16:15 GMT), after which it activated its safety protocols, coordinated the care of the victims and their transport to the city from Cusco.
“The Peruvian National Police were present at the scene to begin the relevant investigation.
The company will provide details of the accident as soon as it receives additional information,” the company told EFE.
