Edifier QR65 analysis: sound, lights and action

Edifier is one of the reference brands when it comes to finding quality speakers at a reasonable price. A Chinese multinational has conquered half the world with models like its own R1850DB either S1000MKII 2.0 which stand out not only with good sound processing, but also with very wide connectivity options and become de facto field equipment for every pocket.

A few weeks ago, the company introduced its QR65a pair of tabletop speakers that can also be used as shelf equipment or even as part of a home theater project. Let’s see why they stand out and what we can expect.

Specifications

  • Total output power (RMS): treble 15 W x 2, mid-bass 20 W x 2
  • Load output power: 70W max
  • Drivers:
    • Heights: 1.25 in (32 mm)
    • Low Mids: 2.75 in (70 mm)
  • Frequency response: 55 Hz – 40 kHz
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: ≥ 85 dB (A)
  • Audio inputs: Bluetooth, USB-A, RCA
  • Bluetooth version: V5.3
  • Dimensions (width x height x depth)
    • 141.5mm x 213mm x 216.8mm (active speaker)
    • 130 mm x 213 mm x 212 mm (passive speaker)
  • Net weight: 5.3 kg

First of all, for more than acceptable power. Their 70W RMSmaking them ideal companions for any workspace, completely filling any studio or medium-sized room with sound and without distortion. By being certified High-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wirelesswe ensure that it is capable of faithfully reproducing audio files and sources of the highest quality, supporting resolutions up to 24bit/96kHz.

However, what catches our eye the most when we take them out of the box is their design. With a futuristic look, it nevertheless commits to sleek minimalism, sober lines and a white finish that conveys a modern and sophisticated look, complete with a front that shows off its exposed drivers (no front cover) and a framed plastic finish. transparent. On the right side of the active speaker we find a flat button with which we can change the audio inputs (Line-In, USB, Bluetooth) and two dials: one for volume and the other with which we can “play” with different colors. schemes that will be projected inside the speakers (although we can leave them completely off).

To achieve this effect, which is certainly very curious (also very far from a certain aesthetic playing games) uses what Edifier called technology TempoAbyss so the speaker enclosure itself can display lighting effects that look like layers and layers of light strips disappearing into a mirror. By default we have 11 different effects, but from the application Edifier Connect We can configure much more from our smartphone.

On the back, in addition to the switch, we find a USB-A input, an RCA input and the two most interesting elements that add value to the entire device: the port SUB OUT which will allow us to supplement these speakers with a subwoofer and two USB-C ports that we can use to charge other devices such as smartphones, tablets, etc.

Their dimensions (141.5 mm x 213 mm x 216.8 mm) and weight (5 kg per unit) allow us to place them discreetly in virtually any space. But they also sound very good. 2.75″ mid-bass drivers with an aluminum alloy membrane can reproduce bass with a frequency of up to 55 Hz, making the mids sound rich and full. Dome tweeters 1.25″ silk membrane They are finely tuned for accurate reproduction of high frequencies, whose highs sound sharp and clear.

This is exactly where we have to applaud Edifier’s good work the most, as the mids and highs behave in a way we’ve rarely heard from speakers of this size. On the other hand, the bass, while satisfactory, sounds flat when needed (we hardly noticed any distortion in their favor) and for the full experience it is certainly advisable to integrate that subwoofer that they suggest in the connectivity section. The section we would like to add, by the way, integrated an optical input and possibly a headphone jack. Nothing serious if we have a small DAC with which to improve the experience, but this must be taken into account if we want to “work” with different sound sources.

As for Bluetooth, its 5.3 version is obviously improving, it is fast and offers LDAC codec support, which allows us to enjoy music in high quality without the need for cables, although our experience was not without some. drops the particular ones we understand are hard to avoid. Finally, it should be noted that Edifier is included in the package aluminum speaker standswhich allow us to avoid vibrations and sound color effects that arise from its reflection from the surface of the table.

In short, a balanced and high-quality design, which for around 300 euros is in the middle of what we can find in this type of table speakers.
