AI, artificial intelligence

AI, regulatory compliance and cybersecurity are key concerns for Belgian IT decision-makers, according to Beltug’s annual survey, in which nearly 400 CIOs and digital leaders shared their priorities for the coming working year.

The results of the Beltug Priorities Compass show that artificial intelligence will be at the top of Belgian companies’ agendas in the coming year. CIOs see AI as a key technology that is becoming increasingly important for business operations.

Almost half of respondents said that integrating AI into their IT environment is an absolute priority. However, many questions about security, ethics and data protection are also raised when using AI. These concerns are reflected in the top 10 priorities, in which four topics are directly related to AI. It shows that the impact of AI goes beyond mere technological innovation.

Compliance with legislation requires more resources

In addition to AI, compliance with new laws is a second key focus for CIOs. European regulations such as the NIS2 Directive, which aims to improve cybersecurity in various sectors, provide for additional obligations. More and more rules are also being introduced in the area of data and AI. Belgian CIOs are under pressure: on the one hand, they want to be innovative, but on the other hand, compliance with the law requires more and more time and resources. In addition, it is not always clear how suppliers deal with these new regulations, which makes the situation more complex for companies.

According to Beltug, there is a growing need for reliable information about the new rules. This means that companies have to invest more in legal support and compliance. In a tight labor market, this means there is less room for other projects.

Cybersecurity remains a concern

Cybersecurity is an ongoing concern for Belgian companies. The Beltug survey shows that this issue is once again high on the priority list, partly due to rising geopolitical tensions. CIOs are concerned about the increasing cyber threats and see AI as both a solution and a potential threat. On the one hand, automated attacks using AI can increase risks, on the other hand, companies are looking for ways in which AI can help strengthen their cyber defenses.

The NIS2 Directive, which comes into force in October, ensures that cybersecurity will remain a key topic of discussion for companies in the future. The need for a solid IT security strategy is more urgent than ever.

Cloud technology under scrutiny

In addition, CIOs are raising concerns about the use of cloud technology. The unpredictable costs and the security of data stored in the cloud remain important issues. The time when a Cloud firstStrategy was the norm for all companies, seems to be over. CIOs are now making conscious decisions about which applications will be placed in the cloud and which will remain local.

For example, the results of the Beltug survey show a clear shift in the priorities of Belgian IT decision-makers: AI, legislation and cybersecurity are of central importance in an increasingly complex digital world.
