Micron expands its storage catalog with the Crucial P310

Micron has announced the launch of the Crucial P310, an SSD that reaches near the maximum performance allowed by the PCIe 4.0 interface and is sold in three versions with a capacity of up to 2 TB.

Micron is one of the world’s storage giants and one of the few manufacturers capable of making their own NAND, DRAM and controllers to bring an SSD like this to market. “It delivers incredible performance and lets users do everything faster, from playing games to launching Windows to running multiple creative apps at the same time”explains Jonathan Weech, senior director of product marketing for Micron’s Commercial Products Group.

We are talking about an SSD in the M.2 2280 format, which, when connected to the PCIe Gen4 port, achieves a data transfer speed of up to 7,100 / 6,000 Mbytes per second sequential read/writewhile in random mode it goes up to 1 million input/output operations per second (IOPS) and random writes up to 1.2 million IOPS.

Micron is talking about up to 40% better power to performance ratio “versus other units” and performance “20% faster in real-world tasks than other Gen 4 SSDs when booting Windows, running applications like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and loading PC games”. We assume that the manufacturer refers to its performance with a built-in cache that speeds up access to the most used data, although this is not mentioned in the specifications anyway.

Not to mention it’s not Gen5, the fastest on the market. It must be said that these units are compatible with previous versions of the standard and can be installed on motherboards with PCIe 3 connectors.

The decisive P310, availability and price

The drive comes with a five-year warranty and is available at Crucial.com and major retailers in three storage capacities and with the following official price:

  • 500GB: $88.99
  • 1TB: $114.99
  • 2TB: $189.99

A cooler version will be released in the coming months, which Micron says will be ideal for use on consoles like the PlayStation 5 and desktop computers.
